Tim Fawcett, United Kingdom, 2020
Inspired by minimal abstract painters such as Robert Ryman, combined with gestural spontaneity of Cy Twombly and Robert Rauschenberg's layering of elements and found materials. Moreover this was painted whilst listening to some challenging lyrics by Frank Black, "oil under the soil", which led me to think about war torn areas and the effect on innocent lives.
This was painted directly and spontaneously without preconception or planning, relying on instinct and experience. This creates an honest and heartfelt composition that holds layered elements of balance and playful energy and imbalance combined. The process is all important, with it's contrasting marks "interrupting" and punctuating the underlying plain, whilst holding down the overall composition.
